Edgar Lungu, the immediate former President of Zambia, has died. He was aged 68. News of the demise of Edgar Lungu was confirmed by the Patriotic Front, his party, in a statement.
Lungu was president of Zambia for a period of six years beginning in 2015.
He lost to Hakainde Hichilema, the current president.
The Patriotic Front said Edgar Lungu was getting “specialized treatment in South Africa.”
The party did not name the illness for which the former president was receiving treatment.
Lungu’s daughter Tasila recorded a video in which she said her father had breathed his last at 06:00 (04:00 GMT) on Thursday, June 05, 2025.
Edgar Lungu had been placed under “medical supervision in recent weeks.”
“In this moment of grief, we invoke the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ – the timeless creed that guided President Lungu’s service to our country,” said Tasila.
