UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima says she is shocked that first son and Commander Land Forces Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has refused to delete a tweet on the Tigray war.
In his tweet, CLF Lt Gen Kainerugaba has said he supported the cause of “my great and brave brothers in the Tigrayan Defence Forces” and that “those who raped our Tigrayan sisters and killed our brothers must be punished!”
Byanyima, who is opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye’s wife, begged the first son to delete the tweet, reasoning it would put Ugandans in Ethiopia in trouble.
But Kainerugaba refused to delete the tweet.
He reminded Byanyima “it is the responsibility of the Ethiopian government to protect all citizens and visitors in Addis and the rest of the country,” further asking, “if the TDF is doing it in areas they control, why shouldn’t the government?”
One tweep observed that “the lack of awareness of what a tweet like this from someone in his position [Muhoozi Kainerugaba] could trigger, is stunning!”
To show how much she was surprised by Kainerugaba’s refusal to delete the ‘controversial tweet,’ Byanyima replied: “shocking.”
