Makerere University’s Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration (DVC-F&A) Prof Eria Hisali has announced the relocation of top administration offices from the Main Building.

In a memo sent out on September 23, Prof Hissali said all administration officices previously housed in the Main Building will relocate to the Central Teaching Facility (CTF) One.

Hisali copied the memo to Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe and the Director of Estates and Works.

The relocation comes days after a September 20 fire that burnt offices in the Main Building.

Investigators are still trying to establish the cause of the fire that burnt through the iconic structure for hours starting at minutes past midnight.

In his September 20 Coronavirus address, President Yoweri Museveni blamed the fire on negligence.

“We don’t know how it started but we already have some cases of negligence but I am sure the Vice Chancellor will be doing something about his staff,” Museveni said.

A security guard and police officer who were supposed to be on duty on the fateful night.

“At the time of the fire outbreak, the officers on duty were inside the building near the entrance and they apparently did not notice the problem until they were alerted by the Chief Security Officer,” said Prof Nawangwe.

Hisali has now written to all occupants of offices on Levels III and IV on CTF One to prepare to vacate.

He added that the office of the DVC-F&A will soon find them new space in which to operate.

“Following the fire outbreak which gutted the Main Building, Management has decided to temporarily resettle offices Administration Offices to Central Teaching Facility 1,” Hisali wrote to occupants of Levels Three and Four at CTF One.

“The purpose of this communication is to inform you that the offices you currently occupy will be immediately taken over by the University Administration.

“The office is working quickly on your resettlement to alternative accommodation and this will be communicated shortly.”
