FINALLY: Museveni Orders Son Muhoozi to Release Anita Among from House Arrest

For months, the fate of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has remained tied to a wider investigation into the finances and administration of Parliament, while her movements were severely restricted and her political future became increasingly uncertain.

The restrictions followed searches at properties associated with Among in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea as authorities investigated allegations relating to corruption, wealth declaration and the management of parliamentary funds.

As the investigation unfolded, Among withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament. Jacob Oboth Oboth subsequently emerged as her replacement in the leadership of the House.

But while the parliamentary leadership changed, Among remained largely confined to her Nakasero residence.

Her situation eventually became a concern for political, cultural and religious leaders, particularly in Teso, where she has considerable political support.

Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Etomeileng Emolot, the Paramount Chief of the Iteso Cultural Union, has reportedly taken up the matter with senior government officials, seeking dialogue over the restrictions imposed on the former Speaker.

The Emorimor led delegations to senior government figures, including Gen. Salim Saleh. During a recent meeting in Kapeeka, he reportedly raised concerns about Among’s financial circumstances, particularly after her bank accounts were frozen.

Meanwhile, several senior Parliament officials have already been charged before the Anti-Corruption Court over alleged offences arising from investigations into the institution’s finances. The charges include embezzlement, money laundering and causing financial loss.

Among has continued to maintain her loyalty to President Museveni. During the controversy, she said the President had protected her rather than mistreated her.

She also attended parliament online to avoid losing her Bukedea District Woman MP seat after missing many sittings.

Now, Muhoozi says Museveni has directed him to release Anita Among.

The latest development could now give the Bukedea Woman MP the freedom to move beyond her Nakasero residence and potentially resume political and constituency activities after months of restrictions.

It remains unclear, however, whether the decision will also result in the unfreezing of her bank accounts or the restoration of access to other assets reportedly affected by the investigations.

The breakthrough came on Tuesday morning when Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that President Museveni had personally intervened.

“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest,” Muhoozi said, using Among’s initials.

“We shall do that as well.”

The directive places the former Speaker on the verge of regaining her freedom of movement, although it does not, by itself, signal the end of the investigations into Parliament or resolve the outstanding questions surrounding her finances and assets.
