Police have arrested main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) spokesperson and Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, his party has confirmed.

Ssemujju was arrested in Kungu-Buwaate while we was campaigning.

They drove him to Kira Police Division Headquarters.

Police accuse the opposition politician if gathering crowds in contravention of Covid19 prevention guidelines.

In a short statement released by his campaign team shortly after his arrest, Ssemujju said he had found summons related to a December 06 campaign meeting he held at Bweyogerere.

“This office is investigating a matter involving your continued act of mobilizing and gathering your supporters in large numbers exceeding 200 and without observing social distance in contravention of rule 9(1)(e) of the Public Health (control of Covid19) rules 2020 as amended, and Electoral Commission guidelines governing political campaign meetings,” read part of summons issued by Kira Divisional Police CID officer Maliserino Mulema on December 08.

“Despite several cautions by police to desist from such an unlawful practice, you have continued doing so in total disregard of the existing laws and guidelines.”

CID officer Mulema wanted Ssemujju to report to Kira Divisional Police on December 09 to record a statement but the FDC leader was no show.
