Uganda’s main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has claimed the police was on a mission to kill its 2021 presidential candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) in Namayingo District.
On December 16, police in Namayingo hurled a teargas grenade towards Amuriat, splashing him with teargas.
Images captured by reporters on the presidential candidate’s campaign trail show Amuriat in a cloud of smoke.
Namayingo District Police Commander (DPC) Apollo Tayebwa instructed his men to disperse Amuriat’s rally at Nsono Trading Centre in Buyinja Sub County.
Now, FDC has claimed Tayebwa had planned to end Amuriat’s life.
“The DPC of Namayingo Apollo Tayebwa had a mission to kill President Patrick Amuriat Oboi. This [attempt] happened at Nsono Trading center Buyinja SC, Namayingo District, where a teargas grenade was thrown at his car,” claimed FDC.
But the party said such assassination attempts at Amuriat would not discourage the presidential candidate and the political organization from challenging long-serving president Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.
“Whatever the provocations, the message must be delivered,” the party said.
“No matter what we go through, we continue to bring you the message of building a new Uganda.”
