EXPLANATION: Why Onapito Ekomoloit Will Not Be Laid to Rest Until November

The body of Francis Onapito Ekomoloit, a former presidential press secretary and ex-MP for Amuria, will not be laid to rest until late November 2024.

Also a celebrated political analyst, former journalist, university lecturer and board chairman of Nile Breweries Limited at the time of his death, Onapito Ekomoloit passed on last week after a short illness but he was said to have been battling lung cancer.

The National Organising Committee (NOC) for the funeral of the former Museveni press secretary has announced that their decision to halt most preparations for his burial until November.

The decision was reached on Monday, September 30, 2024 in a meeting held in the cabinet library. In attendance were representatives from Onapito Ekomoloit’s family and Parliament.

After the meeting, Presidency Minister Milly Babirye Babalanda announced that the decision was informed by the need to respect Onapito Ekomoloit’s will and wishes.

It has been reported that Onapito Ekomoloit had made it clear that doctors should ensure that his body does not decompose so quickly as there would be need for his grave to be prepared to the way he wanted it.

It is said that before his death, Onapito Ekomoloit had even talked to an engineer to work on his final resting place, sharing the details of how it should be constructed.

These are some of the details that will be taken care of in period between today’s decision and late November 2024.

“Following a meeting involving the family and lawyer of the deceased former Member of Parliament for Amuria and Presidential Press Secretary, Hon. Onapito Ekomoloit  and the National Organising Committee (N.O.C) at the Cabinet library today, it has agreed to align the burial arrangements with the will of the deceased,” announced Minister Babalanda.

“Therefore, Hon. Onapito will be buried in late November (this year) according to his wishes as contained in the will. N.O.C, the family and Parliament will give an update on final arrangements early in November. We continue to pray for the bereaved to find strength in this trying time.”

It should be remembered that Museveni has granted Onapito Ekomoloit an official burial, meaning that the government will meet the funeral expenses. (See Details Here).
