Ex-PM Rugunda’s Son Joins Race for NRM Top Job

Sam Kwame Rugunda, son to immediate former Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, is seeking a key position in the structures of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Turning 45 on July 01, Kwame Rugunda says he is aware of how service in present times will affect Uganda’s future.

Kwame, Ndugu Rugunda’s second born child, has expressed interest in the role of General Secretary of the NRM Entrepreneurs’ League.

“The future of our nation will be determined by how we choose to serve it today. Over the next few weeks, I will move around our nation to understand the needs of our entrepreneurs, and ask for their support to serve them as General Secretary of the NRM Entrepreneurs’ League,” he announced in the afternoon of June 14, 2025.

His announcement was greeted with mixed reactions online. But several of his friends and those who know him encouraged him and wished him well.

Kwame is the most politically interested of the Rugunda children. In 2012, Kwame ran for an East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) seat but was unsuccessful.

He would later say the election had given him a chance to have a feel of the political scene but vowed not to give up.

As a generation, Kwame told Daily Monitor’s Risdel Kasasira (RIP) then, we must not be spectators but must arise to face head on the challenges of our day.

“I got an opportunity to test the waters and it was debut to the political scene. I do have interest in politics because it gives a very important platform through which someone can make a contribution to bettering their society,” he said in the same interview.

“As the older generation gradually begins phasing out of their active involvement, the younger generation must gradually begin taking up these responsibilities… When political, economic and other responsibilities inevitably fall on the laps of yet another generation, we cannot afford to be found unprepared.”

True to his word, Kwame Rugunda is now seeking active political involvement in Uganda’s affairs at a time the country is transitioning from the 1986 class – to which his father Ndugu Rugunda belongs.

Last month, first lady Janet Museveni talked of a “significant transition” and a “defining moment” for Uganda, after her and her husband President Yoweri Museveni read a joint apology to Ugandans, as reported Here and There.

Kwame is passionate about new technologies. The Chief Executive of CryptoSavannah, Kwame was selected to the World Economic Forum Council on Cryptocurrencies in 2020.

His father Ndugu Ruhakana Rugunda is Museveni’s special envoy. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
