Education Ministry Allows International Schools to Continue With Classes After Postponing Reporting Date for Local Schools

The Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda has given international schools the green light to proceed with Term Two classes and exams, despite the government pushing the reopening date for local schools to February 10, 2026.

This decision applies to schools operating under foreign examination systems like Cambridge International Examinations and the International Baccalaureate.

The ministry cited alignment with international academic calendars and the need to maintain uninterrupted learning as reasons for the decision.

International schools had already started Term Two before the official reopening date, making any interruption impractical. This move aims to minimize disruptions, especially for candidate classes preparing for international assessments.

However, the ministry emphasized that international schools must comply with the Education Act and other regulations, and will be monitored to ensure adherence to national education standards.

This means they will be keeping a close eye on these schools to ensure they’re meeting the required standards.

The statement was issued by Dr. Cleophus Mugenyi, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports.

The reopening date for local schools was revised to February 10, 2026, reportedly to align with the new government calendar and ensure a smooth transition after the elections.

“The Ministry hereby informs you that due to the General Elections and to ensure the safety of all learners, all Schools and Education Institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday 10th February 2026,” said Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports.
