Driver Was Asleep When Bus Carrying Kampala School Pupils Overturned in Mityana – Police

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety of Uganda Police Force (UPF) says preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the bus carrying Kampala school pupils was asleep when the vehicle overturned in Mityana.

Police have confirmed that two pupils were killed in the Sunday, August 03 morning accident at Kagavu in Mityana, along the Mubende-Kampala Road.

The HMK Transporters Ltd bus was carrying pupils of Day Star Primary School in Makindye from a trip in Kasese.

At least 11 people were injured in the accident. The injured included the headteacher and tour guides.

“Pupils died and 11 others injured today on the 3rd of August 2025 at 5:30am in a single fatal crash at Kagavu, along Mubende–Kampala Road in Zigoti, Mityana District,” noted Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura.

“The crash involved a bus, UAP 829U belonging to HMK Transporters Ltd., which was transporting pupils, tour guides and the Head teacher of Day Star Primary School in Makindye, Kampala.”

Kananura added: “The bus was returning from a school tour in Kasese when, upon reaching at Kagavu, the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to overturn. The crash instantly claimed the lives of 02 pupils, while 11 others who included 04 tour guides & the Headteacher  sustained injuries.”

He warned schools to prioritize the safety of pupils during school trips.

“This incident serves as a stern reminder to all school administrators: safety and well-being of pupils must be treated with the utmost seriousness,” urged Kananura.

“Children cannot make decisions for themselves, it is the responsibility of schools to ensure all necessary precautions are taken when planning such trips.”

Recent road accidents in Uganda have been blamed on reckless driving, poor state of roads, overloading and vehicles’ dangerous mechanical conditions.

There is need to do more to improve road safety in Uganda so as to reduce on the loss of lives and injuries associated with road accidents.
