Dr. Chris Mukiza Receives Rotary Award for Excellence in Statistical Leadership

Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, the Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has been honoured with the Rotary Award by the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda in recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedication to national service through quality statistical work and professional excellence.

The Chief Guest, Hon. Mike Sebalu, who also serves as District Governor for D9213 and is a member of the Rotary Club of Bukoto, commended Dr. Mukiza in his remarks, praising him for demonstrating exemplary vocational service aligned with Rotary’s values of integrity, service above self, and lasting community impact.

He highlighted the importance of statistics in national development, noting that accurate and timely data is essential for policy formulation, planning, budgeting, monitoring, and effective service delivery.

“Statistics are not just numbers; they are the backbone of decision-making,” Hon. Sebalu said, stressing the vital role institutions such as UBOS play in enabling evidence-based planning and national progress.

He further acknowledged Dr. Mukiza’s leadership as key in strengthening Uganda’s statistical systems and ensuring that national planning is grounded in credible and reliable data.

Hon. Sebalu also explained the selection process for the award, noting that nominations are made by members, reviewed by a board, and then approved by the general assembly.

He added that Dr. Mukiza has consistently delivered high-quality statistical outputs across all levels of administration, making him a deserving recipient of the honour. He also noted that Dr. Mukiza is a member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga and a Major Donor.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Chris Mukiza expressed appreciation to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for the recognition, describing the award as encouragement to further strengthen Uganda’s statistical systems and ensure UBOS continues to provide reliable, relevant, and timely data for national development.

“I am truly grateful to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for recognizing my service with the Rotary Award,” Dr. Mukiza said. “This recognition reflects not only my individual efforts but also the collective commitment of the institution to excellence.”

He noted that Rotarians use statistical information to support government efforts in communities, citing examples such as the blood bank at Mengo Hospital and the cancer unit at Nsambya Hospital, both aimed at improving public welfare.

He further emphasized that UBOS has continued to strengthen Uganda’s statistical ecosystem to ensure consistent availability of reliable data for planning and decision-making.

He encouraged UBOS staff to join Rotary clubs of their choice in order to broaden their service impact and professional networks, highlighting the shared values between Rotary and statistical service delivery.

The President of the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda, Ann Kamugisa, commended Dr. Mukiza for his leadership, noting that it has strengthened institutional credibility and significantly contributed to Uganda’s development agenda.

She added that under his leadership, UBOS has become a key pillar in national planning, supporting government institutions, the private sector, and development partners.

She further stated that the Rotary Award reflects the club’s appreciation of Dr. Mukiza’s outstanding contribution and the positive difference he has made in the lives of many Ugandans.

The award ceremony was held at Statistics House in Kampala and was attended by Rotarians from various clubs within the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
