Democratic Party (DP) President Norbert Mao is the new Secretary General of the Democrat Union of Africa (Dua).
Mao and others will serve a three-year term.
DUA members elected new leaders during the organization’s General Meeting which held via Zoom.
Key figures from centre right political parties across the African continent attended the virtual meeting.
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo Addo, Dua’s patron, gave the keynote address.
Tundu Lissu, the flagbearer of Tanzanian opposition party Chadema in the ongoing elections, also addressed the meeting.
Members elected Namibian leader of opposition McHenry Venaani as Dua Chairman.
Venaani’s deputy will be John Boadu, the Secretary General of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Narend Singh from South Africa’s Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is the new Treasurer.
Nick Salat of Kenya African National Union (KANU) will be the Vice Chairperson for the East African region, while Dr Elias Chakwera from Malawi’s Malawi Congress Party (MCP) will lead the Southern Africa block as Dua Vice Chairperson.
Dr Emmanuel Agbo from Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be the Vice Chairperson for West Africa, while Rahhal El Makkaoui from Morocco’s Independence Party (Hizb al-Istiqlal/Parti de l’Indépendance) will be the Vice Chairperson for Northern Africa.

- Dua is an association of democratic parties in Africa and like-minded political parties of the centre and centre right.
- Founded in Dakar, Senegal, in 1997, it is affiliated to the global International Democrat Union (IDU).
- Dua provides a forum in which parties holding similar beliefs can come together and exchange views on matters of policy and organizational interest, so that they can learn from each other, act together, establish contacts and speak with one strong voice to promote democracy and centre, centre-right policies around Africa.
