Don’t Re-Elect MPs Who Have Refused to Attend Gulu Sittings – Speaker Tells Voters Speaker Anita Among has urged voters to ensure that MPs who boycott Gulu plenary sittings do not return to Parliament as the representatives of the people. The opposition led by Joel Ssenyonyi, the Nakawa West MP, leader of opposition in parliament and spokesperson of National Unity Platform (NUP), has called for the boycott of the regional parliamentary sittings. The regional sittings will happen in four regions of Uganda, beginning with the northern where plenary sittings started on August 28 at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu City. The Ssenyonyi group argued that the money spent on the regional sittings could have been put to better use such as deploying medical interns. But in Northern Uganda, opposition MPs have defied Ssenyonyi and attended the Gulu sitting. Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) legislators, including former leader of opposition Betty Aol, even won the speaker’s praises for their defiance. “I want to thank Gilbert Olanya, former Leader of Opposition Betty Aol and Anthony Akol [for cooperating] because the Opposition said they are going to boycott this sitting,” Speaker Anita Among said. She then urged voters in Northern Uganda not to reelect MPs who have skipped the sessions. “I want to tell you people of the Greater North that whoever boycotts this session, don’t return that person to Parliament because we are going to discuss issues that concern the greater North,” she
said Ahead of today’s sitting. It is not only opposition MPs from Northern Uganda that have defied Joel Ssenyonyi. Even those from central Uganda such as Abed Bwanika have refused to obey his orders to boycott the sittings and argued why the leader of opposition made a blunder. (See Details
