Liverpool, the Premier League leaders and Carabao Cup finalists, have exited the revamped Champions League after losing 4-1 to a determined PSG in Paris.
After losing last week’s first leg 1-0 in Paris, PSG levelled the tie with Liverpool through Ousmane Dembele’s 12th-minute strike.
This gave them the courage to stage a strong fight that rewarded them with a place in the last eight of the revamped Champions League.
It was a night for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to celebrate after emerging as the hero in the shootout, saving shots from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones before Desire Doue scored the winning penalty.
Donnarumma replicated his Euro 2020 Final penalty shootout heroics between Italy and England at Wembley.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, Liverpool boss Arne Slot stated it was the best game of football he has been involved in, despite his side losing with a 4-1 result.
He stated that his team was unfortunate despite an incredible performance, contrasting it with the game played last week in Paris.
Liverpool’s exit from the Champions League on March 11 leaves them to focus on domestic trophies.
Liverpool is leading the Premier League table by 15 points over second-placed Arsenal and is set to face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup Final on March 16.
The Champions League return leg continues tonight with two English teams. Arsenal, which humiliated PSV in the first leg at home with a score of 7-1, will host PSV at the Emirates Stadium. Meanwhile, Aston Villa will face Club Brugge; Aston Villa won the first leg 3-1.
