Maj Gen James Birungi and Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba
Maj Gen James Birungi’s troubles with Gen Muhoozi Continue, this time with the former chief of military intelligence being arrested and detained at Makindye Military Barracks.
It is said that Maj Gen James Birungi faces allegations of falsified intelligence and misappropriation of military resources.
He is expected to be produced in the military court in coming days.
Also arrested alongside Birungi and facing similar charges are Colonel Peter Ahimbisibwe, former Director of Counter Terrorism and Lieutenant Colonel Ephraim Byaruhanga, Director of Special Operations.
Treason and corruption charges are also expected to be slapped on Maj Gen James Birungi and his co-accused.
Birungi’s latest woes stem from a report from an investigation carried out by a team headed by Lt Gen Sam Okiding, the deputy chief of defence forces.
Lt Gen Okiding and his team looked into the validity of allegations on the reliability and quality of intelligence reports and corruption by Birungi and others.
It is also said that Birungi’s successor Maj Gen Richard Otto reviewed documents, financial and intelligence, and reportedly found a lot of rot within the operations of Defence Intelligence and Security.
This is the latest twist in the troubles of Maj Gen James Birungi.
In April 2025, Gen Muhoozi dropped Maj Gen Birungi as head of UPDF intelligence. Muhoozi fired Birungi from his job two months later, and sent him to Burundi. (See Details Here and There).
