Thieves have stolen laptops from Bank of Uganda in a daring central bank robbery like no other. The daring thieves broke into what should be a well guarded central bank building near City Square on Kampala Road in the early hours of Monday, May 4, 2026.
Laptops were stolen during the robbery. Reports say that up to seven laptops were taken from the central bank building.

It was not until working hours of Monday morning that the central bank realized there had been a break-in. Security agencies were called in to carry out investigations into how thieves broke into the building.
The central bank security team was said to be cooperating with the joint security agencies. Reports indicate that the investigating team is also pursuing claims that there could have been some sort of collusion involving some staff at the central bank as well as members of BoU’s security team.
It is said that the thieves could have entered from the gate located opposite City Square before gaining access to the commercial building where they reportedly spent some time.
Bank of Uganda says its operations will continue and that no disruptions had been occasioned by the break-in.
The break-in has prompted security agencies, including from the Uganda Police Force (UPF), UPDF intelligence and the Internal Security Organization (ISO) to swing into action.
Armed and combing down town Kampala malls with a police sniffer dog, security operatives carried out a search operation to try and see if they could recover laptops and other items of value stolen from Bank of Uganda.
The joint security operatives were seen at Kalungi Plaza, Kirumira Towers and Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza in Kampala.
For over six hours, security operatives restricted entry into and exit out of these buildings. Scores were arrested, with some reportedly found with what was believed to be stolen mobile phones.
