First son and Commander Land Forces (CLF) Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has showered the interim leader of Sudan’s Transitional Government Gen Abdel Fattah Burhan with praises and urged the world to support him.
Weeks ago, Burhan overthrew a civilian-led transition government, attracting criticism from the international community, and sparking protests in Khartoum and other cities.
But days ago, Burhan reinstated Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok after the duo signed a deal to the return of a civilian-led transition.
Sudan is yet to return to normal since the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
As Burhan and Hamdok signed their agreement, Lt Gen Kainerugaba cheered on and expressed his support for military leader Burhan.
“We pray for our brothers and sisters in north Sudan all the time. However, there is no doubt that His Excellency, General Abdel Fattah Buruhan, is one of the greatest leaders in Africa today,” said Kainerugaba. “He must be supported.”
Kampala seems to be capitalizing on Sudan’s woes to restore relations with Khartoum.
During Bashir’s reign, Kampala accused Khartoum of backing Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, while Kampala openly supported Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) that ultimately won South Sudan independence.
But with Bashir out, Uganda seems to be working hard to woo Sudan. For example, Museveni played a vital role in convincing the US to erase Sudan from the list of sponsors of terrorism.
