With just a day left to the start of a new financial year (FY2022-2023), President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government, secondary school arts teachers have continued to stand their ground regarding their demand for salary increment in the same manner that pay for their science counterparts was raised. 

Uganda’s national army, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has spoken out on reports that its officers have gone three months without getting their salaries. 

A proposal that the available funds meant for the increment of salaries for secondary school teachers starting July 2022 be redistributed so that both science and arts teachers have their pay enhanced would create a situation where each gets an insignificant raise. 

Vice President Jessica Alupo has invited leaders of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (Unatu) for a meeting aimed at convincing secondary school arts and primary school teachers to end their strike and return to class. 

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government has bowed to pressure and invited striking secondary school arts and primary school teachers under the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (Unatu) for talks on resolving the ongoing industrial action. 

Uganda’s Public Ministry seems to be making a U-turn on orders to fire all striking secondary school arts teachers and their primary school counterparts. 

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja latest statements on the strike by secondary school arts teachers and primary school teachers points to determination by President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government to make the teachers cry. 

Uganda National Teachers’ Union (Unatu) secretary general Filbert Bates Baguma has explained why he thinks that teachers of science should not be bundled under the category of scientists, and why they are not so special from other teachers. 

Uganda’s President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni recently told striking secondary school arts teachers that he was committed to ensuring that the gap between the monthly salary of a science teacher and that of humanities teacher is closed.
