Currently admitted at St Francis Hospital Nsambya in the capital Kampala, National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine is expected to undergo surgery.
Bobi Wine was injured in an altercation between his camp and the officers in uniform as he returned from a thanksgiving ceremony held by party lawyer George Musisi in Bulindo, Wakiso District.
Police claim Bobi Wine and his supporters had defied orders not to hold a procession.
Speaking on Bobi Wine health condition, party spokesperson and leader of opposition in parliament Joel Ssenyonyi said the NUP boss was out of danger.
But he has been in a lot of pain, said Ssenyonyi, “but he is alive. That’s the most important thing.”
Ssenyonyi said a teargas canister had hit Bobi Wine and exploded and “fragments of that teargas canister got into his leg.”
He said the doctors had told them Bobi Wine would require further surgery to remove the tear gas canister fragments from the leg.
How Bobi Wine was injured remains an issue of discussion, with police and NUP offering different sides to the story.
Ssenyonyi wondered why men and women in uniform “sometimes get excited and do things anyhow.” He said the police should be “smarter” even if they want to cover up.
Ssenyonyi was unhappy that police had claimed that the NUP leader had stumbled as he entered his vehicle, injuring himself. “What about the fragments that are in his leg?” the LOP asked.
After the incident, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said officers on the scene had claimed Bobi Wine stumbled as he entered his car. This is contrast with earlier claims by members of Bobi Wine’s security team and party who insist he was shot. (See Details Here and There).
