Bobi Wine Dares Museveni

Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has dared President Yoweri Museveni to an independent audit of the 2021 election results following allegations by the head of state and government that the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) rigged up to one million votes.

In his debut on the presidential ballot, Bobi Wine lost to Museveni, according to results released by the Electoral Commission (EC) headed by Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, an appointee of the president.

Writing to President Museveni, Bobi Wine insisted that it was the president who instead engaged in widespread electoral malpractice, and that state security agencies had worsened the situation with brutality meted against opposition supporters.

“As you are aware, you, Mr. Museveni, rigged not only the 2021 presidential election, but the previous elections as well. While the Supreme Court previously fell short of nullifying those elections, it nevertheless confirmed rigging and other forms of election theft conducted not by the opposition but by you and your agents,” wrote Bobi Wine.

“The 2021 election – the culmination of a brutal military operation you waged against us throughout the presidential campaigns — is potentially the most rigged election in history. YOU KNOW THAT YOU DID NOT WIN THAT ELECTION. We have evidence to this fact.”

Bobi Wine dared Museveni to waive his immunity so that he can face thorough court proceedings and an audit of the election results. He said Museveni should step down if the audit finds that he stole NUP’s victory, adding that he was ready to face prosecution if the courts and a special audit find that Museveni won the election in a free and fair manner.

“Submit to a credible, transparent and independent audit of the 2021 electoral process, conducted by a reputable international body, preferably the United Nations. We are ready to submit our evidence to prove the amount of rigging which you engaged in, as well as the other crimes you committed against us and our people,” he wrote.

“Should the results of this audit prove that we engaged in any form of election rigging as you claim, we should be prosecuted in accordance with the law. If on the other hand the audit proves as we know that you robbed us of our victory and usurped the will of the people of Uganda, you must undertake to step down and allow the people of Uganda to be led by a government of their choosing.”

Last week, Museveni claimed that Bobi Wine’s NUP had rigged over one million votes. He had made a similar claim after the 2021 elections, saying that his votes in Buganda had been stolen. (See Details Here and There).
