Bobi Wine Banned from Running for President in 2031 and Beyond — Muhoozi

Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has declared that National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, will not be allowed to contest another election in Uganda.

Muhoozi’s remarks have placed Bobi Wine’s potential 2031 presidential ambitions at the centre of a fresh political confrontation involving the opposition leader and the family of President Yoweri Museveni.

Bobi Wine has challenged Museveni for the presidency twice, first in the 2021 election and again in the 2026 presidential election. On both occasions, the Electoral Commission declared Museveni the winner, although the opposition rejected the results.

Following the 2026 election, Bobi Wine went into hiding in Uganda before eventually leaving the country. His departure has since become a recurring point of criticism from Muhoozi, who has accused the NUP leader of relying on foreign support and of being a coward.

The latest remarks also come as political mobilisation around Muhoozi’s name continues ahead of the 2031 election.

Members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) have held endorsement and mobilisation events in different parts of the country, with supporters openly promoting Muhoozi as a possible presidential candidate.

Muhoozi, however, remains a serving military officer and CDF. Despite his military position, he has repeatedly weighed into Uganda’s political affairs, particularly in defence of his father and in attacks on some of Museveni’s political opponents.

His public interventions have also extended beyond domestic politics, including statements concerning foreign diplomats and neighbouring countries.

The Constitution and electoral laws, meanwhile, establish the legal requirements for presidential candidates and provide for the Electoral Commission’s role in the nomination and electoral process.

Muhoozi’s latest declaration just a political statement rather than a formal Electoral Commission decision barring Kyagulanyi from future elections. But the first son and military chief wields power to turn statements into action.

Bobi Wine’s political future has nevertheless remained a major question following his departure from Uganda after the 2026 election, particularly as the opposition focuses its eyes on the next electoral cycle, with hopes of ending the reign of Museveni, who has ruled the country for four decades now.

In his latest attack against Bobi Wine, Muhoozi has made an unequivocal declaration:

“Kabobi [Bobi Wine] will never be allowed to stand in another election in Uganda again. He proved he is a foreign puppet when he run abroad 10 days after the last elections. We will never let that clown stand for anything in Uganda again. Never!”
