UNAIDS executive director and opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye’s wife Winnie Byanyima has blasted the FDC party for reminding president Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni that he and his family were once poor.
It all started when Museveni said he would employ children of Rich middle class Ugandans to fight corruption.
FDC reminded Museveni he was once poor.
“We can see from this old photo that Mr Museveni’s father lived in squalor. Added to his wife’s autobiography that he stole and drank milk meant for condolences shows that he is a son brought up in abject poverty; and going by his utterances, no wonder he can’t fight Corruption,” FDC tweeted.
Byanyima then said she was “disappointed that FDC keeps this tweet that pours contempt on people who live in poverty.”
She added: Museveni‘s unjust, outrageous and unacceptable statement has found it’s perfect match in yours! Sad. You could try to be better.”
FDC pulled down the tweet but published it again, saying Besigye’s wife was entitled to her opinion.
“We apologise for pulling it [the tweet] down, especially that there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s factual, and was written as a response to Mr Museveni’s utterances on his deployment of nepotism to fight corruption, which are both illegal,” the party wrote.
“Our tweet was not in any way an insult to those that live in poverty. We are a party that champions social mobility, and this means fighting nepotism everywhere it exists as it breeds corruption. That said, Ms Winnie Byanyima is entitled to her opinion.”
