Besigye: Whether I’m Dead or Alive, There Will be Protests This Year

Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has said there will be protests in Uganda in 2022 whether he is alive or dead.

In a morning interview on January 31, Besigye talked about a range of issues, including a struggle against President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government.

A four-time presidential candidate whose streets protests have previously shaken Museveni’s regime, Besigye made it clear that he was certain protests will happen this year, with or without him.

“Protests will be there without a doubt this year whether I am alive or not. I don’t see how it can be avoided,” he told NBS.

The Front for People’s Transition (PFT) leader also talked about the need for unity of purpose among change-seeking forces, further revealing that “there’s now great hope that we can rally together.”

Warning that the economic challenges would continue to hit everyone in the country, Besigye saluted citizens for continuing to pile pressure on the regime.

“The population is now moving ahead of us because we have shown some weaknesses in our leadership, and we are following them. Those that weren’t appreciative of the dynamics are now appreciative,” said Besigye

“We don’t have to be friends. We just have to realize that we have the same challenges and have to work together to get out of this.”

Besigye is said to have sought a meeting with main opposition NUP, whose leader is singer Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, to discuss the way forward on efforts to end Museveni’s rule. (Read story here).
