Besigye Admitted in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mulago. Still Unconscious. Sister and Personal Doctor Granted Access – Opposition Politicians Say

KAMPALA — Veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mulago National Referral Hospital and remains unconscious, according to opposition politicians who have been following his condition.

Besigye, a prominent critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government, was transferred to Mulago after collapsing in court on Wednesday during proceedings in his long-running case.

Opposition figures said Besigye’s sister and personal physician, Dr Olive Kobusingye, has now been allowed access to him at the hospital.

Doreen Nyanjura, the former Kampala Capital City Deputy Lord Mayor, said Besigye had been admitted to the ICU and remained unconscious.

“Dr. Kizza Besigye has been admitted to the ICU at Mulago Hospital. His sister and personal doctor, Dr. Olive Kobusingye, has now been granted access. KB is still unconscious.”

Nyanjura, who has been among those closely following developments surrounding Besigye’s health, added an emotional message to the veteran opposition leader.

“Hang in there KB [Kizza Besigye], we your soldiers shall be with you to the end.”

The latest account came after Besigye was rushed for medical attention following his collapse in the High Court in Kampala, where he had appeared as his trial proceeded amid objections from his legal team.

Besigye transferred to Mulago under heavy military deployment

Dr Lulume Bayiga, another opposition politician, also confirmed that Besigye had been transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, describing the situation as deeply concerning.

“Dr Besigye was transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital INTENSIVE CARE UNIT. He arrived with heavy Military deployment at around 2020hrs.”

Bayiga criticised the circumstances surrounding Besigye’s treatment, particularly the alleged restrictions on access to his family and those closest to him.

“These fellows have no remorse or sensitivity to the family and the most concerned. How can you have Besigye in ICU without involving the people most concerned?”

The comments came amid growing concern among opposition leaders and supporters over Besigye’s condition following his collapse in court.

Ingrid Turinawe, another opposition politician, separately confirmed that Besigye had been taken to Mulago and that Dr Olive Kobusingye had been granted access to her brother.

“Confirmed: Dr. KB has just been taken to Mulago Hospital. His personal Doctor who is his sister Dr. Olive Kobusingye has just been allowed to access him. He has been put in ICU, and he is still unconscious.”

Turinawe appealed to Ugandans to continue praying for the veteran opposition politician.

“Ugandans, let’s continue to ask God to intervene in this situation.”

The reports from Nyanjura, Bayiga and Turinawe broadly converge on three developments: Besigye was transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, he was admitted to the ICU, and his sister and personal doctor, Dr Olive Kobusingye, was granted access to him.

Bobi Wine: Besigye still unconscious after court collapse

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, also spoke about Besigye’s condition, saying the veteran opposition leader had remained unconscious since collapsing in court.

“We’re informed that since the time Dr. Besigye eventually collapsed in Court as the bogus trial went on, he is still unconscious.”

Besigye’s collapse occurred as his trial was getting underway before Justice Emmanuel Baguma. His legal team had objected to the proceedings, with Besigye rejecting lawyers provided by the state and insisting on his experienced legal team.

The veteran opposition leader has previously faced repeated arrests and prosecution over his political activities and opposition to Museveni’s government.

His latest health crisis has now intensified concerns among his family, political allies and supporters, particularly after his transfer to the ICU.

The statements by the opposition politicians indicate that Besigye’s sister and personal doctor has now gained access to him, potentially allowing his family and medical team to directly assess his condition.

However, the accounts circulating from the opposition figures had not, at the time of publication, been accompanied by a detailed medical statement from Mulago Hospital or the Ministry of Health explaining Besigye’s medical condition.

For now, the most immediate concern among his supporters remains his reported unconscious state and his treatment in the ICU.

As Turinawe put it: “Ugandans, let’s continue to ask God to intervene in this situation.”
