Appoint Muhoozi Vice President – MP Tells Museveni

A Ugandan MP has told Museveni to appoint Muhoozi vice president. Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, aged 81 and Uganda’s ruler since 1986, is expected to unveil his 2026-2031 cabinet in coming months.

Currently, Maj (rtd) Jessica Alupo is the vice president, having taken office in 2021 in a shock appointment – alongside that of Robinah Nabbanja as prime minister.

Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni son, is the current military chief or Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and senior presidential advisor on special operations.

The first son also harbours presidential ambitions and is the chairman of a political organization, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).

In recent years, Muhoozi has risen through the ranks to become a key element of Uganda’s politics and military. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1999, Muhoozi was commandant of the elite Special Forces Command (SFC) – which is in charge of the first family’s security – from 2008 to 2017.

He would later serve as Commander of Land Forces, was promoted to a full General and was appointed CDF by President Museveni in 2024.

In his two years as CDF, Muhoozi has shaken up the UPDF, arresting generals over allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

Just last week, he ordered the arrest of two generals and fired the UPDF’s deputy intelligence chief, as reported Here, There and Over There.

Now, some politicians are beginning to front Muhoozi for the vice president job, the second highest office in the land.

The proposal has been fronted by Kanyum MP Simon Peter Opolot Okwalinga who has advised President Yoweri Museveni to appoint Muhoozi the vice president. MP Opolot Okwalinga sent his message through state house comptroller Jane Barekye.

In the view of this member of parliament, Gen Muhoozi will help to tackle corruption in government based on his method of work in the UPDF.

MP Opolot Okwalinga says that the Inspector General of Government (IGG) fears to crack the whip against a number of officials, especially those above her in the rankings of the national order of precedence.

The legislator says that Muhoozi would be in charge of discipline in government.

The proposal by Opolot Okwalinga had the backing of other MPs such as Twalla Fadil, the legislator representing Tingey County. Unsurprisingly, Muhoozi recently gave Fadil Twalla a coveted patriotic officer number.
