Anomaly in Tumukunde documents delays ex-spy chief’s presidential nomination

Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama has ordered presidential aspirant Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Kakurugu Tumukunde to rectify an anomaly in his documents before his nomination as a 2021 election candidate.

Tumukunde’s nomination was scheduled for 1pm. He set off from Kololo and arrived at Kyambogo earlier than 1pm.

The EC verification team notified him that there was need for him to certify one his documents before his nomination exercise could proceed.

“There is an anomaly in the aspirant [Gen Tumukunde]’s documents,” said Byabakama.

“We have advised him to rectify. Fortunately he came right before time and still has one hour.”

The EC then took a 30-minute break to allow Tumukunde rectify the anomaly.

Upon successful nomination, Tumukunde will be the second aspirant expected to be nominated.

His former boss and incumbent Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni was nominated minutes to 11am.

He warned the opposition candidates planning chaos.
