Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has publicly responded after President Yoweri Museveni reportedly granted her forgiveness, ending a period of uncertainty surrounding her political future.
The development followed a statement by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who announced that Museveni had decided not to pursue prosecution against Among, whom he said had made mistakes but had been forgiven by the President.
“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA [Anita Annet Among] from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” Muhoozi wrote on August 25.
“No. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her,” he added.
In her first public remarks after the decision, Among expressed gratitude to God for what she described as the restoration of her freedom and thanked President Museveni for extending what she called parental grace and mercy.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Museveni for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” Among wrote.
The Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament also praised Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for what she described as professionalism during the period she was under restrictions.
“I also extend my gratitude to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for his professionalism throughout this period,” she said.
Among said she remains committed to serving her constituents and supporting the ruling leadership.
“As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership,” she stated.
The announcement marks a major political development for Among, who had faced intense scrutiny in recent months amid allegations of misconduct and other controversies that had placed her position within Uganda’s political establishment under pressure.
