Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao has wedded longtime lover Beatrice Nambi, previously her research assistant at the Democratic Party (DP).
Formerly married to Martin Kayanja who is said to live in London, Beatrice Nambi – now Beatrice Mao – tried to run for the Kampala Lord Mayoral job but failed to secure the tickets of major parties like the NRM and Bobi Wine’s NUP.
She settled for Mao’s DP but the Electoral Commission (EC) led by Justice Simon Byabakama disqualified her from the race for failure to register as a voter.
It is said that it was around that time that Mao and Beatrice Kayanja fell in love as she was facing a troubled marriage.
Until 2019, Norbert Mao was married to Naomi Achieng Odongo but the couple divorced after 16 years of marriage.
Now, Mao officially has Beatrice Nambi as his wife. The couple exchanged vows at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Gulu.
In Gulu, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and his wife witnessed the wedding of Norbert Mao and Beatrice Nambi.
The wedding followed traditional ceremonies, including an introduction or kwanjula.
“I really love the Buganda Culture! Marriage is not just a contract between two people. It is a covenant between families and communities. So, today in the small hours of the night before dawn my family went to bring my wife home. What an elaborate culture of intricate rituals!” Mao praised Buganda’s culture after the traditional ceremonies were completed.
But before the wedding, a group of ‘concerned’ DP members led by Henry Kamya had objected to the wedding, saying that Mao and Beatrice could not be trusted with the sacrament of holy matrimony.
On Saturday 1st June 2024, Hon. Norbert Mao is intending to exchange vows with his lover at St. Joseph Cathedral in Gulu before His Grace the Archbishop of Gulu Diocese.
Our concern about this wedding is not about the presumed bride, who we have heard, ran away from her matrimonial husband in the United Kingdom, and whose husband continues to groan in pain because of a politician who stole his wedded wife and the mother of his children.
Our concern is about the glory and honour of our esteemed Holy Catholic Church and the Church minister, being duped to preside over a function which the bridegroom is the shameless seller of a public institution, the Democratic Party, which he had been entrusted to lead, to grow and promote, to the repressive regime he had long fought, just to get the position of a Cabinet Minister.
We find it unthinkable for a man that divorced his first wife, and also selfishly sold the Democratic Party to the NRM, to be trusted with Holy matrimony with a bride stolen from the wedlock of another man.
Your Grace, Our Lord, never say that we did not raise this in time or that we never cautioned you. The Democratic Party is dying at the merciless knee of Norbert Mao, kept on her neck and we members of the Democratic Party can no longer breath.
If Mao can kill the Democratic Party that has raised him and he is so happy to see members crying for our dying Party, what will happen to the nascent family? We, the Democrats hereby place our objection to the offer of the holy sacrament of matrimony to a man with such impaired trust, we pray that our Objection will be listened to and considered for the good of the Holy Catholic Church.
The contents of a letter of objection by a one Henry Kamya, who called himself a concerned member of the DP, dated May 30 and addressed to the Rt Rev Joseph Antony Zziwa, the Chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference.
