Amuriat’s next course of action after FDC election loss

Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has announced it’s immediate post-election plan: a nationwide mobilization programme.

Party spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda told reporters on March 01 in Kampala that defeated presidential candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) will lead the mobilization tour.

The national mobilization drive’s launch will happen in Bugiri on March 04, announced Ssemujju at the party’s head office in Najjanankumbi.

FDC leaders, including Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi and Chairman Ambassador Waswa Birigwa, are expected to attend.

Former leader of opposition in Parliament Philip Wafula Oguttu is the lead organiser of the Bugiri event.

“All candidates in the recently concluded elections and FDC branch leaders will be attending this one day meeting. The number of FDC elected leaders in Bugiri grew from below 10 to 34 (sub-county chairmen and councilors),” noted Ssemujju.

“The purpose of these meetings is to review the party’s performance in the last elections. A report detailing what happened in each of the districts will be compiled and presented to National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council for processing.”

For the first time in 15 years, FDC lost ground as the main opposition political party.

New entrants National Unity Platform (NUP) used their popularity in Buganda to win almost 60 parliamentary seats against FDC’s just over 30.

Amuriat also emerged third, the first time an FDC presidential candidate failed to come second to Museveni.

The party is gearing up for internal elections.

The party publicist further revealed that the report and the subsequent discussion will form the basis for the next FDC internal elections scheduled for mid this year.

“As you are aware the term of office for the current FDC leadership expired in July last year but because of COVID restrictions, the FDC was unable to hold internal elections. These elections are now planned for around June/July this year,” he said.

“The grassroots elections will be concluded by a national delegates’ conference towards end of year at which the new FDC leaders will be elected.”
