The death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has brought an extraordinary coincidence to the history of the Tooro Kingdom, with the young king dying just a day after the anniversary of his father’s death.
Omukama Oyo died at about 10:00 p.m. on August 27, 2026, according to a statement announcing his death.
His father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, died on August 26, 1995, at the age of 49.
The dates mean that the Tooro Kingdom marked the 31st anniversary of Olimi III’s death on August 26, 2026—only hours before his son died.
The coincidence is particularly striking because Oyo’s journey to the Tooro throne began with his father’s death.
Oyo was only three years old when Olimi III died in 1995. He subsequently became Omukama and was enthroned on September 12 of the same year, becoming one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs.
For more than three decades, Oyo remained at the centre of the Tooro monarchy, growing from a child king into an adult monarch who presided over a kingdom undergoing significant social, cultural and economic changes.
His death on August 27 therefore comes almost exactly 31 years after the event that unexpectedly placed him on the throne.
