UNAIDS Executive Director, Winnie Byanyima, stated that President Yoweri Museveni intends to govern Uganda alongside his son during the 2026-31 presidential term.
Speaking at her home in Kasangati on Tuesday, Byanyima claimed her husband’s imprisonment stems from his knowledge and opposition to the alleged power-sharing plan.
“President Museveni has a plan in this term to install his son so they can govern the country together. Besigye knows about that plan and he disagrees with it. This is why he is imprisoned,” she said.
Byanyima also criticized the treason charges against Besigye, her husband, calling them fabricated and aimed at silencing a political opponent.
She cautioned that Museveni may try to amend the Constitution to validate the alleged arrangement, leveraging Parliament’s support to secure his grip on power.
“The next five years will be very challenging because it seems President Museveni’s plan, he realises that he’s aged,” she said.
“His plan is to govern the country with his son. He may attempt to change the constitution to that effect, and he’s banking on the parliament to support him.”
Talk of a plan to have the Ugandan president only elected by MPs is not new, but Museveni minister Kahinda Otafiire has opposed the move. (See Details Here and There).
Winnie Byanyima has always spoken out against the ills of the Museveni government, prompting regime sympathisers to attack her over her previous love relationship with Museveni, as reported Here, There and Over There.
