At least three people were burnt beyond recognition in a bus accident along Njeru–Katosi Road in Buikwe District on May 05, 2025 evening, according to the regional police spokesperson.
The accident involved a bus belonging to YY Coaches and Courier Services. It happened when the bus veered off the road, overturned and caught fire.
Some reports indicated that the driver of the bus lost control as he tried to dodge a commercial motorcyclist (bodaboda) who was trying to cross the road.
Hours after the accident happened, the Uganda Police Force (UPF) is yet to confirm the number of people who died in the crash as well as their identities.
Reports suggest that police and YY Coaches and Courier Services are still trying to confirm the identities of the people who were on the bus as well as those who died and those who were injured.
Several passengers who were injured were rushed to Kawolo Hospital, St Francis Lwanga Hospital in Buikwe, and other nearby health facilities, according to SP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.
But Sezibwa regional police spokesperson Hellen Butoto has been quoted as saying the number of the injured passengers at over 30 passengers.
These, Butoto added, included 10 male adults, 14 female adults, four female juveniles and two male juveniles.
Butoto put the number of those who have so far been confirmed dead at three. She said the bodies of these passengers were burnt beyond recognition.
These identified bodies were taken to Kawolo General Hospital as police and YY Coaches and Courier Services continue trying to identify them.
For bus companies that do not take a record of passengers before setting off, identifying them can be a tough task.
