400 Government Jobs at Uganda Prisons Up For Grabs. See How to Apply

Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) will recruit up to 402 Ugandans for government jobs as recruit warders and wardresses on a replacement basis. The recruitment exercise for the government jobs at Uganda Prisons is happening this month.

According to Uganda Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine, the interested candidates should submit handwritten applications addressed to the Secretary, Prisons Council. The deadline for application is March 14, 2025.

“Applications must be delivered to the nearest Prison Unit or one of the 19 Regional Prisons Headquarters,” Baine added.

The regional headquarters are: South Eastern (Jinja), Iganga (Iganga), East Central (Mukono), Mid-Eastern (Soroti), Eastern (Mbale), North Eastern (Moroto), Kampala Extra (Luzira) or Central Region (Security House near Prisons Headquarters), North Central (Luwero), Mid-Western (Masindi), Southern (Masaka), Kooki (Lyantonde), North Western (Arua), Mid Northern (Lira), Northern (Gulu), South Western (Mbarara), Western (Fort Portal), Mid Central (Mubende), or Kigezi (Kabale).

Applicants should be Ugandan citizens aged 18-30, which age must be verified with a National Identity Card. They must also possess an O-Level Certificate with at least four credits (B or C), including one in English, and a pass (D) in Mathematics. “Note [that] Grades B, C, and D apply only to candidates under the New Lower Secondary Curriculum,” clarified Baine.

The applicants must also be physically fit, and demonstrate good conduct with no criminal record Each application, Baine further announced, must include three (03) photocopies of certificates/result slips, three (03) photocopies of the National Identity Card, three (03) recent passport-size photographs, a letter of recommendation from the LC I Chairperson of the applicant’s village, endorsed by the LC II and LC III Chairpersons of the district of origin.

“Uganda Prisons Service warns that presenting forged documents or impersonation is a criminal offense and shall be prosecuted in courts of law,” the prisons spokesperson warned. After submission of applications, a shortlist will be sent out followed by interviews.

Those who will succeed will be trained for nine months.

“Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews, with dates to be announced. Successful applicants will complete a nine-month Basic Prisons Officer’s Training Course, with appointment confirmed upon completion,” noted Uganda Prisons Service. 

“All stages of the recruitment process are free of charge. Applicants must not pay any money to anyone for any service during the exercise.”

Uganda Prisons Service also made it clear that university graduates and diploma holders are not eligible to apply. Months ago, The Pearl Times reported that hundreds of thousands of university graduates had resorted to bodabodas after failing to find jobs. (See Details Here and There).
